Listening to on the Wonders of Web Weaving podcast, one thing in particular caught my attention, and that was when she was telling James about her studio. It’s a 20–30 minute walk from home and she goes there in the evening after work to do creative things; woodworking, writing, other stuff too I imagine.
I’ve long wanted a place like that myself. In fact, The Squeeze and I talk often about a joint space where we could each do our physical thing, but it is all talk. The reason, I think, is because having worked at home for a long, long time, I am far too comfortable getting up to fold my bread dough for two minutes, or switch the washing machine to spin, or keep an eye on the stock that’s bubbling away, or even just walk around the terrace and get away from my desk.
The downside is that “my” space is a little slice off the main living room. It’s fine, it serves my purposes, but it doesn’t lend itself to physical projects that would need to be spread over a few days. That’s what I really miss, a large flat surface where I could leave stuff out.
At one point we looked into renting one of small apartments in our building, which would have allowed at least some of the benefits of working at home. That didn’t work out, but it might one day in the future. So, never say never.
